612 Yarmouth Road, Raleigh, NC 27607 (P) 919-345-6079 (F) 919-755-153 Walt@Layline.com www.TAB-TriangleNC.com Walt On TAB: "The TAB process allows our board members, the person at the top, to take a limited amount of time once a month to focus on and reflect upon "their plan". We find this helps members relax and not worry the other 29 days of their month. Knowing they are working a plan that is based on solid strategic thinking and sound decision making keeps them from wasting time and energy circling back during the month and questioning their direction. Members are able to stay on task and get their Critical Success Factors accomplished. If members do have an issue, they know it is an average of 15 days/two weeks until their next board meeting, they find they can put it on the back burner for now, relax and rely on their peer board to help them see a clearer picture during the TAB Board® meeting. The process works!" Why does Walt get fired up about TAB? The guts of my Vision Statement. "TAB gives me a chance to contribute to the greater good." I'm a believer in the fact that Privately Held businesses drive our economy. As Raleigh's TAB Facilitator and TAB SBL Coach I am able to add to the success of our local private companies and our local economy. I like to focus on the words Facilitator and Coach, I am not a Consultant, I am a Facilitator and Coach. (Facilitate Def. To make easy, to lessen the difficulty.) I help find the right path and work to clear the path so our members get things done for themselves. I am not here to be an oracle of wisdom or answers but to help members find the wisdom and answers then help them implement plans based on the wisdom and answers." One of my favorite football coaches used to remind us of the original 1500s definition of the word Coach. (Coach Def. A vehicle that takes important people and things of value where they want to be, ought to be, and need to be.) A coach makes this happen. Walt's Previous Business Life Others Describe Walt as "A Seasoned Multi-Company Entrepreneur". Ask Walt what he's likes most about his business life, he will answer: "... sharing experiences with other owners and people at the top... listening to them talk about their businesses and business experiences helps me reflect and adjust my perspective... always for the better... I'm pretty good at putting myself in the other guys shoes..." Walt began his business life in 1983 as a CPA for Ernst and Whiney in Raleigh, learning and practicing "the universal language of business" as he calls it. In 1986, Walt shed his accounting wings and founded Layline Inc. a mail-order/catalog/internet business specializing in selling stuff to guys who race sailboats in the US. In the old-day he would refer to himself as a "mail order guy", now, so all generations will understand, he may describe what he did as "consumer direct marketing". Over the years, Brown captured an incredible 68% of the target market as repeat buying households. Layline still exists. www.layline.com. On the shoulders of Layline, Walt built three other multi-million dollar brands from scratch. Using direct marketing techniques, he built demand and profitable sales in every major metropolitan area in the US. These companies have sales channels which sell into these areas Directly AND via Dealers and Distribution. In 2006 Brown Sold Layline and the tangential companies to a group out of Atlanta. Then using he entrepreneurial drive, he turned right around and launched Raleigh TAB. Now, 2006, Walt has multiple vibrant TAB boards. His largest member has 135 people, the smallest is a software start up founded by a guy who built and sold a software business in the 80s. Big or Small they all deal with the same issues. Brown managed and motivated a team of 28. He likes to say: (Smiling) "... I had 8 mortgages including my own, but only one house." Referring to his employees and their dependence on his company doing well. Click here to contact Walt. Click here to view Education & Resources.
